POSITION TITLE: Bus Monitor Substitute

EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-exempt

REPORTS TO: Transportation Manager

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As needed

HOURLY SALARY: $9.99

Primary Purpose:

Substitute for the bus monitor and ride buses; assist bus driver to ensure safe and orderly transportation of students, and assist students with disabilities while boarding, riding and departing the bus or vehicle.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification

High School Diploma or GED

Special Knowledge/Skills

Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and verbal instructions

Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment

Ability to work well with children with disabilities

Experience

Experience working with children, preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Student Management

  • Lift and carry students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs.
  • Supervise students as they board and leave bus and cross street and ensure that all students are off the bus at the end of the route or trip.
  • Take children into building and help them find their way.
  • Learn and adapt to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional need.
  • Manage student behavior and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior.
Routes and Schedules
  • Become familiar with all routes to and from campus to assist the driver.
  • Maintain an updated route schedule.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
Safety
  • Supervise students' use of seat belts, harnesses, or car seats.
  • Follow emergency procedures and help driver administer first aid, if necessary.
  • Operate equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, positioning students, etc.
  • Assist driver in keeping bus clean.
Communication
  • Assist driver in operating two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office as needed.
Foster good school/community relations and good relations among all school employees.

Professional Growth and Development
  • Become familiar with and follow procedures established by transportation and special education office.
  • Participate in professional learning, staff meetings, and special events as assigned.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Wheelchair lift, ramp, lock, and special needs adaptive equipment; safety equipment such as flares, reflective signs, fire extinguisher; two-way radio; computer
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent walking, climbing, bending/stooping, kneeling/squatting/crouching, crawling, pushing/pulling, twisting, reaching
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand and arm motions, wrist flexion/extension
  • Vision: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30-55 pounds with assistance, and more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance
  • Environment: Work is performed indoors, outdoors, and in bus or vehicle; regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, hot and cold temperatures, moving mechanical parts, dust, fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals; frequent in-district travel; occasional statewide travel; occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours
  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress, work with frequent interruptions
